Chapter 8: Confused Priorities

Jason could not remember if he ever felt this happy in his life. He had relationships before, some which lasted a few weeks and some a few months. The reason for most of his breakups was that he never really liked these girls after the first meeting, but pushed himself at the behest of his parents to try and go out more often and give these girls a chance.

He just found most girls dull and superficial. All of them wanted him to buy them material things or take them somewhere nice. He cursed his affluent background. He was never able to make true friends because of it. When all the kids hung out after school, he was whisked away in his parents’ limousine, and when at school, he was shunned because his parents had too much money.

He spent most of childhood alone. His driver, Angelo, was his best friend growing up. He still met him from time to time, although it was becoming difficult to make time now after becoming a doctor at the hospital. Though he sometimes disliked being lonely, his loneliness was also his advantage. He was never into drugs or alcohol or parties, but spent his evenings reading books and playing chess with his old man. His loneliness was the reason he made it as a successful doctor at such a young age, and ultimately the reason that he met Janine.

For the first time in his life, he felt very differently about a girl. Janine was not one of those girls that his mother wanted to see every other weekend. She was not predictable. She was fierce, honest and straight forward. He was elated that she had finally decided to let him help her.

While Jason was as happy as ever, Janine was still fighting with the idea of being indebted to someone for money, even if it was for the treatment of her mother. Jason had paid all the bills that were due for her treatment. Even though she had agreed to let Jason help them out of this sticky situation, she knew she had to give back the money that was due to Jason as soon as she possibly could.

She had found a friend, and maybe even something more, in Jason, but she knew all too well what money could do to relationships. She also bore the scars from her previous relationship which still made her feel wary about trusting another guy so soon. She felt now that she needed to pay off her dues as soon as possible if she wanted to be happy with Jason, so she did not quit her second job at the grocery store.

One night, when Jason was taking his rounds around the hospital, he found Janine sleeping on the couch just outside the ER room. He woke her up and asked her if she was still continuing with her job at the grocery store. She told him that she was just tired and that was the only reason for her napping.
